Event – 2023

World Anemia Day

The department of Paediatrics Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital along with IAP Puducherry chapter jointly celebrated world anemia awareness day on 27 th November 2023.

Event 1
A health awareness talk on iron deficiency anemia was organized in thiruvennainallur urban health centre. Dr. A. Arulkumaran professor of Paediatrics SMVMCH along with the postgraduates spoke on the causes of iron deficiency, signs and symptoms treatment and the preventive aspects of iron deficiency anemia around 50 to 60 mothers, grandparents children attended the event. An MCQ competition was conducts on anemia and prizes were distributed.
Groundnut cake was distributed to all who attended the event. Mother who interacted well and answered to many oral questions asked were awarded with prizes,
Iron tonic was also given to children who are noted to be anemic clinically.

Event 2
A display of common food items rich in iron content was kept as a small exhibition to the public in the Paediatric ward. Food items which are poor in iron and unhealthy was also displayed for the awareness of the parents.

This was followed by an interactive audience session with the parents, children, fathers and grandparents by Dr. A. Arulkumaran professor of Paediatrics and Dr. Shakthi Abirami faculty of department of Paediatrics.
Parents were explained on the symptomatology of anemia with charts depicting pictures on diagnosing pallor with various signs and symptoms. The role of deworming, problems of prolonged cow milk usage, proper introduction of complementary foods, role pf routine iron supplementation for infants and adolescents was also explained.
This was followed by a MCQ competition with yes or NO questions on common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia diagnosis myths and treatment with iron therapy. The program was well appreciated by the parents.

National Newborn Care Celebration week

The Department of Pedidatrics -Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College And Hospital and IAP PUduchery chapter celebrated newborn week this year in a grand manner

National Newborn Care Celebration week -2023, Newborn care week is celebrated every year in our hospital from Nov 15 to Nov 21, The aim for celebrating the week is to raise awareness about the importance of essential newborn care and highlighting this tears theme nurturing newborn lives through community – facility management

DAY 1 (16/11/23)
Event 1

As a part of new born care week celebration we had inaugurated exhibition at our department, Exhibition was inaugurated by our respected Medical Superintendent Dr. Prakash. The posters were depicting the various newborn care and preterm care creating awareness among the community, Around 190 members visited including patients and their atttenders undergraduate students, nursing staffs, other department faculties and Postgraduation.

Pamphlets containing the newborn care Do’s and Don’t s were distributed to antenatal and postnatal mothers, parents and public was inaugurated by our respected Head of Department Prof Dr.Bharath Kumar.

Event 2
An interactive health talk in the hospital podium to the public, patients and their attenders about the do’s and don’t s of newborn care danger signs in newborn and preterm care was given by Professor Dr.Arulkumaran and post graduates and doubts of the audience were clarified.

We had organised health talk at our SMVMCH-RHTC Thiruvennainallur, health talk was given by Dr.Arun Kumaar (Senior Resident) and postgraduates from Department of Pediatrics, Awareness and importance of newborn care concentrating on there role of community in promoting health newborn practices.

Quiz competition with YES or NO questions were conducted at Thiruvennainallur-RHTC and the prizes were distributed for the winners, around 50 members participated

Event 5
Model making competition was conducted for final year MBBS students, students were asked to prepare models highting on topics which emphasis on newborn or preterm care/follow up the exhibition was inaugurated by our respected Academic dean Dr.Karthikeyan and our respected Head of Department Dr.Bharathkumar, organised by our Associate Professor Dr.Preethi and postgraduates. Around 30 teams comprising around 100 members participated, the students participated with full spirit and enthusiasm, the models were innovative and more of working models were done which reflected the out of box thinking of the students and their innovative way of learning models depicting Retinopathy of prematurity, KMC, Umbilical cord clamping were done and various models depicting the essential new born care were done, 10 models were selected and awarded prizes. The models were open to public and was displayed for a week.

Event 6
Health talk was given to antenatal and postnatal mothers at OG ward of SMVMCH by Dr.Sakthi Abirami(Senior Resident) and the post graduates of Department of Paediatrics. Enlighting on do and don’ts of newborn care.Quiz competition for antenatal and postnatal mothers were conducted by Dr.Arun Kumaar(SR and post graduates)and prizes were distributed to the winners.

Event 7
A quiz competition for post graduates, was organised online via quizapp by Dr.Kanimozhi (Associate Professor) and postgraduates. Around 25 Post graduates participated in the quiz competition.

Event 8
Poster presentation competition for postgraduates of paediatrics OBG and community medicine and staff nurses was conducted under the theme new born care and preterm care organised by Dr.Giridharan (SR) and post graduates. Around 55 participants participated, Inagurated by Dr.Jayashree (Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), various posters depicting newborn care, preterm care were done by the participants and winners were awarded prize and certificates.

Event 9
Standard operating procedure for neurodevelopment follow up for high risk newborn. A session was conducted at our department by Dr.Kanimozhi (Associate Professor) attended by postgraduates around, which was enlightening session and paving the way for more efficient functioning of our high risk newborn clinic.

Event 10
Valedictory function was organised at our hospital auditorium. Dr. Karthikeyan (Professor Department of paediatrics,MGMC) was invited as the chief guest and he gave a lecture on Topic: Essential New born care, His lecture was thought provoking and he highlighted and emphasised the importance of newborn care. Final year undergraduates, all PGs from department of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology attended the lecture. Prizes and certificates were distributed by the chief guest to the winners of various competition held during the week.

IAP CHILD AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH CARE WEEK CELEBRATION 2023

As part of Child and Adolescent health care week celebrations the following events were conducted by the Department of Pediatrics SMVMCH and IAP Puducherry Chapter in a grand manner highlighting on this year’s theme voice vision and vigor of adolescents from 7th November to 15th November 2023.

Teenage day celebration
Event 1
An mini exhibition was opened in the hospital podium for the public with posters depicting the normal pubertal changes in boys and girls , adolescent health problems like anemia , obesity , mobile phone addiction , and posters promoting healthy lifestyle habits were displayed . Many parents who attended the OPD and undergraduate MBBS students attended the exhibition. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.Rajagovindan Director SMVMCH, along with the Dean Academic Dr. Karthikeyan with faculties and post graduates of various departments of SMVMCH.

Event 2
On the same day a Health talk was arranged to parents in the hospital podium addressing to the common adolescent health problems and appropriate preventive measures to tackle the health issues like anemia, obesity reproductive health problems were explained. The talk was given by Faculties from the Department of Pediatrics Dr.Arulkumaran, Dr.Kanimozhi, Dr.Preethi and OBG along with the post graduates parents are also well explained on the role of the family in bringing up a health adolescent. Around 75 peoples attended the event. Pamphlets addressing on adolescent health and tips to bring up healthy adolescent were distributed to the public.

Event 3
A school health talk for adolescent girls was arranged in Bonn Nehru School Thirukannur 100 adolescent girls participated in theevent. Common issues of adolescent girls like normal menstrual cycles, menstrual hygiene, eating problems, undernutrition and Anemia were addressed. The event was conducted by Dr.Shakthi Abirami, Senior Resident of Department of Pediatrics SMVMCH along with female pediatric post graduates. A MCQ competition was conducted at the end of the event and prizes were distributed.

Event 4
A guest lecture was given to nursing students of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College on Adolescent Health Problems. The interactive session was conducted by Dr Arul Kumaran Professor of Pediatrics using placards. Nursing students were asked to talk on common Adolescent health behaviors on the placards chosen by them and students who performed well were given prizes. Around 100 students participated in the event.

Event 5
An MCQ competition was conducted to parents on the Pediatric ward and OPD. MCQ questions addressed on common situations they face in managing adolescent and options of how they showed react to the given situation like school absenteeism, mobile phone viewing etc the event was conducted by Dr.Arun Kumar Senior Resident Department of Pediatrics. Prizes for the winners was handed over by Dr.T. Bharath Kumar professor and HOD dept of Paediatrics.

Event 6
A podcast was also released in SMVMCH mannakural website on the role of parents in bringing up a healthy adolescent by Dr. Arul Kumaran Professor of Paediatrics.

IAP Healthy Lifestyle Day

Event 1
A health talk was organized in Government Higher Secondary School Madagadipet for both boys and girls of STD VII & VIII. Topics of anemia & undernutrition problems of managing academic stress, anxiety were also addressed. The session was addressed by Dr. Nithya Assistant Professor of Department of Pediatrics. Around 65-70 boys and girls attended the event. Healthy snacks (sundal) were distributed to the students. The talk was well appreciated by the students and teachers of the school.

Event 2
A written debate competition was organized by Dr.Preethi Associate Professor of Dept of pediatrics on Technology for children and adolescent PROS and CONS. Around 50 students participated and prizes were awarded to the winners.

Event 3
An interactive Awareness talk was organized to the boys of Bonn Nehru School Thirukannur on how to avoid various risktaking behaviors like substanceabuse, alcohol and the importance of having healthy lifestyle behaviors like proper diet, exercise were stressed. The session was conducted by Dr. Arul Kumaran Professor of Pediatrics Along with the male postgraduatesof SMVMCH. Around 120 boys of class VII TO IX participated in the event

Event 4
As a part of adolescent health care week celebrations, a Guest lecture was organized to undergraduate MBBS students of SMVMCH. Dr.Aram Chenthil IAP Central Executive Board member 2022-23 and past President of IAP TNSC was invited as the chiefguest. The guest talk was on adolescent health and Risk Taking Behaviors of adolescents covering on various problems like substance abuse, alcohol and tips to overcome depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies was well addressed. The interactive talk was well appreciated by the undergraduate MBBS around 100 participated in the event. Prizes were also distributed to the students who actively participated in the interactive session.

Event 5
A poster competition was organized to the Postgraduate students of Dept. of Pediatrics on adolescent health lifestyle behaviors and the role of parents in supporting adolescent health to the post graduates of the dept of department of paediatrics and OBG. Dr, Kanimozhi Associate professor of paediatrics and for the event Dr. Niveditha Prof of OBG are the judges for the event 25 students participated and winners were given prizes.

Daughters Day

Event 1
A health talk was organized in the postnatal ward of SMVMCH to postnatal mothers and to mothers of the children admitted in the pediatric ward . The talk highlighted on bringing up healthy girl children and the session was conducted Dr.Arul Kumaran Professor of Paediatrics, Dr. Shakthi Abirami and the Faculties of OBG Department. The topics were included good touch and bad touch, Nutrition requirements of adolescent girls and menstrual hygiene and adolescent immunization.

Event 2
A drawing competition was conducted to postnatal mothers who delivered girl children. Mothers were asked to picturize on how they want their daughter to be in future. The competition was conducted by Dr.Thambi Prabhakaran Assistant Professor and Dr.Giridharan and winners were chosen. The prizes were given by Dr.T. Bharath Kumar, Professor and HOD, Department of Paediatrics.

Event 3
A health awareness talk was organized at the Urban Health Centre to mothers, grandmothers, and fathers on importance to have a girl in the family and the need to bring up a healthy environment with proper hygiene and good mental health for daughters, the talk was given by Dr.Preethi Associate Professor Dept. of Pediatrics. Healthy snacks were distributed to girl children and prizes were given.

Childrens day
Children day was celebrated on 14th November in the paediatric ward and the OPD of SMVMCH. A huge cake was cut by the children. Cakes, sweets, chocolates with small gifts was distributed to the children. A colouring competition and drawing competition was conducted to children in the ward and OPD in two groups of children less than 5 years and 5 to 10 yrs. winners were chosen and the prizes were distributed to the winners.

The Department of Pediatrics – Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital celebrated World Breastfeeding Week 2023, this year with great enthusiasm and vigor

As a part of World Breast Feeding Week 2023 celebrations, the Department of Pediatrics, SMVMCH, Pondicherry conducted the Breastfeeding week from 01-08-2023 to 07-08-2023.

Day 1

Event 1: Inaugaration Exhibition

As a part of WBW celebrations, On the 1st of august, world breastfeeding week 2023 inauguration was done by the Chief guests- Dr.Rajagovindan, Director of SMVMCH, Dr.Prakash, the Medical Superintendent of SMVMCH, Dr.Kagne, Dean of SMVMCH, Dr.Karthikeyan, the Academic Dean of SMVMCH, Mrs. Rita, the Nursing Superintendent of SMVMCH and Dr.MuthamilSelvi, Principal of SMV nursing college along with the faculties from various departments. Exhibits with pictures depicting the benefits of breastfeeding to mother and baby, various positions of breastfeeding and health talk was given educating mother and their family members about the benefits of breastfeeding.

On the same day, posters were exhibited and explained to mothers of reproductive age, lactating mothers attending the OPD of Pediatrics and OBG (Nearly 200 women and their family members have been educated).Pamphlets containing the benefits of breast milk were also distributed to the women folks.

Event 2: Poster Presentation

We also conducted a poster presentation competition among the Postgraduates of different departments, undergraduates, nursing students and staffs in which 120 participants participated actively. Topic of the presentation being this year’s theme, ‘Enabling Breastfeeding-Making a Difference in Working Parents’ Winners were chosen and participants were appreciated.

Day 2

Event: Awareness Health Talk On 2nd of August- as a part of the celebrations of WBW 2023, Awareness Health talk was conducted in Thirubhuvanai PHC headed by Dr. Nithya with postgraduates and the medical officers of the local PHC. Health talk highlighting the hurdles faced by working mothers in establishing exclusive breast feeding, Methods of breast milk expression, storage and availing Paid Maternity Leave, was delivered to over 50 antenatal and postnatal mothers with active participation in the form of doubt solving. Following which, questionnaires were distributed, and a written quiz was conducted among the patients for which winners were allotted prizes. As the theme of the WBW 2023 is ‘Enabling breast feeding, making a difference in working parents’ health talk was delivered to the working mothers at the In which mothers enthusiastically participated.

Day 3

Event 1: Podcast Contest

On the 3rd of august as a part of 3rd day of celebrations, under the supervision of Dr. Preethi, along with the postgraduates, podcast contest was conducted among the undergraduates in which students spoke about the current year’s theme and put forth their outputs and ideas on enhancing exclusive breastfeeding among the working mothers. Event 2: Postgraduate Quiz Competition

On the same day, postgraduates from different departments (Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Community Medicine) participated in the quiz competition held over the topic of breast feeding headed by Dr. Kanimozhi, 30 postgraduates from above mentioned departments participated with enthusiasm. Event 3: Health Talk – Working Mothers

Awareness Health talk was conducted at a private company named Appasamy Associates Pvt Ltd., headed by Dr. Arul Kumaran, under the supervision of Dr. Sakthi Abiramiwith postgraduates.

Health talk highlighting the hurdles faced by working mothers in establishing exclusive breast feeding, Methods of breast milk expression, storage and availing Paid Maternity Leave, was delivered to over 50 antenatal and postnatal WORKING mothers with active participation in the form of doubt solving.

Many mothers showed their interest in discussing solutions to promote exclusive breastfeeding in working mothers. At the end of the health talk, questionnaires were distributed and prizes given among the audience.

Day 4

Event 1: health talk – antenatal mothers

On the 4th of august, community health talk was delivered by Dr. Arul Kumaran at the Rural Health Centre, Thiruvennainallur, to about 50 antenatal and lactating mothers were enlightened on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding, the common myths regarding breastfeeding, with special focus on the issues faced by working mothers and their solutions.

Event 2 : Pictionary

Under the supervision of Dr. Preethi, Undergraduate Quiz in the form of Pictionary was conducted in which undergraduate (MBBS) students performed with great enthusiasm.

Event 3: Elocution Competition

On the same day, inter-nursing college elocution competition was conducted in the languages of Tamil and English under the supervision of Dr. Nithya, judged by the Head of the departments of Anatomy, Radiodiagnosis, Assistant professor, Dept of Pediatrics and Nursing Superintendent. 8 colleges participated in the inter-nursing college elocution competition, in which 40 students have participated.

Event 1: antenatal mother quiz

Antenatal mother quiz was conducted to enlighten mothers on breast feeding to avoid bad child practices. Mothers admitted in antenatal and postnatal wards were given questionnaire with respect to the current theme and answers were discussed after the session. Selected winners were given prize during Valedictory function.

Event 2: Well Baby Contest

Following which under the supervision of Dr. Hemanth Kumar and Dr.Giridharan, Well Baby Contest was conducted among 50 children, in which children showed great excitement and happiness. Contest was conducted in two age groups, 1st age group being children less than 1 year and the 2nd group of 1 to 5 years of age.

Gifts were given to children who have been exclusively breastfed, age appropriately vaccinated and children who performed well in the puzzles and different game competitions conducted in the department.

Day 6

Event 1: Health Talk – Antenatal Mothers (SMVMCH)

On the 6th of August, health talk was conducted to the antenatal and postnatal mothers , in SMVMCH, where doubt solving was done and breast feeding awareness in the form of stressing the importance of breast milk, explaining about the myths about breastfeeding practices, advantages of exclusive breastfeeding, ‘responsive feeding’ with cues of hunger, breastfeeding among working mothers were explained.

Day 7

Event: Valedictory Event

On the 7th of August, on the occasion of the end of world breastfeeding week, valedictory event was conducted with the heads of the department of various departments, director of SMVMCH, and Chief Guest Dr. V Sudha, Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist.

After inauguration by the Director of SMVMCH, felicitation of the chief guest was done.

Guest lecture by Dr.V Sudha was conducted which was attended by 200 students, postgraduates and faculties. An interactive session where audience were educated and enlightened on many aspects of breast feeding took place.

Following which a role play was performed by nursing students on breastfeeding, bad child practices. Performance was well appreciated.

ORS Week Celebrations – 2023

The Department of Pediatrics SMVMCH and IAP Puducherry chapter jointly celebrated national ORS week. In a grand manner.

28th July 2023

A Health awareness talk to the public was conducted at Thiruvennainallur on the signs symptoms of dehydration, importance of ORS and zinc in the management of acute diarrhea by Dr.A.Arulkumaran Professor of Pediatrics and Dr.Thamizharasan postgraduate student of SMVMCH with the help of posters depicting the use of ORS. Pamphlets highlighting the uses of ORS were also distributed to the public.

29th July 2023 (ORS Day)

Event 1

Poster competition on Postgraduates and interns were conducted on “Role of ORS in acute diarrhoea” in Pediatrics OPD. Winners were selected and posters were displayed to public.

Event 2

A public awareness talk was arranged in the hospital podium of SMVMCH. Posters highlighting the uses of ORS, Do’s and Don’ts in treatment of diarrhoea were exhibited. MCQ competition with yes or no questions on ORS was given for the parents, and was asked to tick the correct option. Prizes were distributed to the winners around 75 attended the talk. An ORT corner was kept into the general public and the method of mixing the ORS and how to administer was also told to the public by the staff nurses of pediatrics ward.

Event 3

A guest lecture was given by Dr.A.Arulkumaran professor of pediatrics to the Nursing Students of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College on physiological mechanism of ORS usage and management and prevention of acute diarrhea. The talk was attended by around 150 nursing students following the talk MCQ test was conducted to the students and students who scored the maximum marks was awarded.

An MCQ competition through Quizz App was held for under graduate MBBS students on Diarrhoea its management and ORS usage by Dr.Preethi.T Associate Professor of Pediatrics. The session was also co-ordinated by Dr.Giridharan senior resident department of pediatrics. Top scorer was awarded with prizes.

World Autism Day

The Department of Pediatrics along with IAP Puducherry chapter jointly organized World Autism Day on 3rd April 2023.

As a part of celebrations Health Awareness talk was organized to the public by Dr.Kanimozhi.T Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics on the common symptoms that will help in detecting autism and the need for early intervention. The talk was supported with various posters displayed to be public on Autism for better understanding.

This was followed by MCQ competition to the parents, with Yes or No questions on Clinical clues that will help to detect autism and on the common myths about autism spectrum disorders. The winners were awarded with prizes which was distributed by Dr. T. Bharath Kumar Professor & HOD, Department of Pediatrics. Around 75 parents and grandparents participated in the event. Pamphlets on autism were also distributed to the public at the end of the programme.

Children was also asked to do physical exercise in the form of a competition (maximum jumps in one minute) and were given prizes. The session was moderated by Dr.Nithiya (Senior Resident) Department of Paediatrics.

An UG competition for MBBS students “Healthy food contest” was conducted participants are requested to write about recipes for a healthy evening snacks in local language for children with calories and protein content for one serving with images in a chart. The programme was moderated by Dr.Preethi.T Associate Professor Department of Paediatrics. The prizes to the winners of the MCQ competition and healthy food contest was handed over by Dr.T.Bharath Kumar Head of the Paediatrics and by the Departmental faculties. At the end of session healthy snacks sundal and buttermilk was provided to the participants.
