October 9 to 13, 2023 (World Mental Health Week)
DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT
- On 09.10.2023, inauguration of stalls and exhibition done. Poster competition was conducted and students actively participated. The session was judged and winners were decided by Dr.S.Arun, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry and Dr. Muthamilselvi, Principal, SMVNC.
- On 10.10.2023, Quiz competition was conducted and quiz master was Dr. Souganyadevi.V, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH. Two teams were selected as winner and runner.
- On 11.10.2023, Elocution competitions were conducted in both Tamil and English. Winners and runners were selected respectively by judges Dr. Venkatarangan. K.S, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH.
- On 12.10.2023, Department of Psychiatry, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College & Hospital and Department of Mental Health Nursing, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College, have celebrated Mental Health Day with theme “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right” at Hospital Basement Auditorium.
Over 150 MBBS undergraduate students, nursing students, paramedical students and faculties from various departments attended the event. Event started with prayer song and lighting the kuthuvilakku.
Welcome address and the theme of mental health day was unfolded by Dr. S. Arun, Professor & Head of Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH. Following which, the guest speaker was introduced by Dr. Souganyadevi. V, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH.
Guest lecture was given by Dr. S.R. Nirmal about mental health day and its importance. It was extensive and informative. The session was interactive and sir had cleared the doubts of students with so patience and elegance. Following that, prizes for winners were distributed by Dr. K. Karthikeyan, Dean Academic, Dr. Girija, DMS, SMVMCH and Dr. S.R. Nirmal.
Students performed skit with the theme being mental health day. It was entertaining and audience cheered and enjoyed every minute of it. Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. A. Ayee, Associate Professor, Department of Mental Health Nursing, SMVNC. The event ended on a positive note with National Anthem.
On 13.10.2023, Dr. S. Arun, Professor & Head of Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH delivered a Community awareness program in the topic Adolescent Psychiatry in DD Podhigai (https://www.youtube.com/live/JOgqadou3eU?si=IRjxfHNNT2zQ-txr). Dr. Souganyadevi. V, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH delivered a guest lecture on stress management in SRM Easwari Engineering college, Chennai. Dr. S. Perarul, Senior resident of Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH delivered an awareness to the student of Gandhi Hr. Sec. School, Thiruvennainallur, Tamilnadu.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:
On 15th September, 2023, Department of Psychiatry of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital conducted “Suicide Prevention Day – Creating Hope Through Action”. It was a half day event held from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the auditorium.
The event started off with a prayer song followed by the Welcome Address given by Dr.S.Arun, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at SMVMCH. Dr.V.Souganyadevi, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH introduced the guest speaker and unfolded the theme.
Guest lecture was given by Dr. S. Sivaraman. Sir had delivered speech on Suicide Prevention and how to effectively help people who are in need of help. It was very helpful and enlightening.
The event ended with a vote of thanks given by Dr.S.Perarul, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH.
March 30 (2023) – World Bipolar Day
On 30th March, 2023, Department of psychiatry of Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital conducted Quiz Competition to celebrate “World Bipolar Day”. It was a one-day event held from 10 am to 1 pm at the College Lecture hall. Participants for the quiz competition were selected from 2nd year, 3rd year and final year MBBS students. A preliminary quiz session was conducted from which the participants got selected. They were divided into 6 teams with each team having 2 participants. Rounds included history, connections, core psychiatry related to bipolar disorder and rapid fire round. Questions about mental illness portrayed in movies were asked to both participants and the audience. Students were enthusiastic throughout the quiz session and showed active participation. Winners and runners were selected by final scores. The event ended on a positive note with students giving feedback about conducting more such interesting quiz sessions in the upcoming years as well.
April 11 (2022) – World Autism Day
On 11th April, 2022, Department of psychiatry of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital conducted “World Autism Day- Inclusive Quality Education For All”. It was a half day event held from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm at the auditorium. The event started off with a prayer song. Dr.S.Arun, Professor and HOD of Department of Psychiatry at SMVMCH gave Welcome address and introduced the guest speaker. He also unfolded the theme. Dr.Shivanand Kattimani delivered speech about Autism. He spoke about the features of autism and how to effectively help the child and the parent. It was an informative and educational speech. The event ended with a vote of thanks by Dr.K.S. Venkatarangan, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH, followed by National Anthem.

On 12.10.2022, Elocution competitions were conducted in both Tamil and English. On 13.10.2022, Department of Psychiatry, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital and Department of Mental Health Nursing, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College have celebrated Mental Health Day with theme ‘Make Mental Health and Well-Being for All a Global Priority’ at MIT Auditorium, Puducherry. Over 250 nursing students, MBBS undergraduate students and faculties from various departments attended the event. Event started with prayer song and lighting the kuthuvilakku. Dr. Souganyadevi.V, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH and Dr. Narayanasamy Kesavan, Secretary gave introductory speech, SMVE Trust gave an interesting speech about mental health and its importance. Following that, prizes for winners were distributed by Dr. Narayanasamy Kesavan, Secretary, SMVE Trust, Dr.D.Rajagovindan, Director, SMVMCH, Dr. R.N.Kagne, Deputy Director cum Dean, SMVMCH and Dr. Sabari Sridhar OT, Professor & Head. The theme of mental health day was unfolded by Dr.S.Arun, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH. Following which, the guest speaker was introduced by Dr.S.Perarul, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH. Guest lecture was given by Dr. Sabari Sridhar OT about mental health day and its importance. It was extensive and informative. The session was interactive and sir had cleared the doubts of students with so patience and elegance. Students performed skit with the theme being mental health day. Debate was performed by a students of two teams, chaired by Mr.Tamil Pulavendran, Assistant professor, Department of Mental health Nursing. It was a fun filled event. Vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs.P.Nathiya, Assistant professor, Department of mental Health Nursing. The event ended on a positive note with National Anthem. 14-10-2022 is the fifth day of Mental Health Week Celebration and it was ‘A Day for & with Mentally Challenged’. Consultants, Postgraduates, Clinical Psychologist and Social worker from Department of Psychiatry had visited Home for Mentally ill at Gingee, Villupuram district and did basic assessment for psychiatric disorders. Medications were prescribed for a period of one month and those who need additional help were advised to visit SMVMCH. The day was well spent, marking the end of an eventful Mental Health Week celebration.
September 28 (2021)-Suicide Prevention Day Celebration
The Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manukula Vinayagar medical college and hospital hosted a guest lecture for the commemoration of Suicide Prevention Day on September 28, 2021. It was a one-day event conducted at the hospital basement auditorium from 9.30AMto 12.30PM.Around 100 nursing college students from SMVNC, postgraduates and faculties from various departments, attended the lecture. Dr.S.Arun, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH, gave the welcome address. Dr.A.John Dinesh, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, AVMC&H, Pondicherry, gave a guest lecture after that. The guest speaker discussed the incidence of suicide, how to identify and help those who are at risk of suicide, and various coping and problem-solving strategies. The presentation concluded with a question-and-answer session in which the audience was able to clarify their concerns. The audience reacted well to the lecture. There was a mime and a cultural performance by nursing college students towards the end of the event. The students were intrigued and their enthusiasm throughout the event was very encouraging. Feedback about the event was very encouraging for the organizers.
October 5 – 11 (2021) – Mental Health Week Celebration
Mental Health week
Department of Psychiatry of Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital along with Sri ManakulaVinayagar Nursing College hosted a 6 days event to celebrate Mental Health Week. This event comprised of the Inauguration Ceremony on day 1, essay writing competition on day 2, Elocution on day 3, Quiz competition on day 4, “A Day for and with Mentally Challenged” on day 5, and celebration of “World Mental Health Day” along with guest lecture and prize distribution on day 6. Both nursing students from SMVNC and UG students from SMVMCH who were interested participated in the competitions. Last day of the event was conducted at the hospital basement auditorium from 10AMto 1PM. Around 150 students from SMVNC and UG students from SMVMCH, postgraduates and faculties from various departments, attended the final event. We were fortunate to listen to Dr.S.Avudaiappan, Associate Professor of Department of Psychiatry, Mahathma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, who gave a scintillating speech on mental health awareness during the last day of the event. This year’s WHO’s mental health week theme of mental health in an unequal world was conveyed very clearly through his speech. Also, this guest lecture was made available to attend through online platform. Overall experience of this event by the students and other faculties was very applauding.
July 9(2021)-Webinar series on Stress Management
In 2021, the Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manukula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital conducted a guest lecture on stress management. It was a webinar series with two-hour virtual sessions that went from 9AM to 11AM. This session featured a talk by Dr.Vikas Menon, Additional Professor of JIPMER’s Department of Psychiatry. This online webinar series was attended by SMVMCH undergraduate students, psychiatric postgraduates, and faculty from otherSMVMCH departments. Through the series, a considerable number of psychiatric postgraduates from various colleges attended this session. The talk about “Preserving Mental Health of Medical Students amidst Covid-19 Pandemic” highlighted stress management techniques that may be used by students as well as those working in the health-care field. Following that, all online postgraduates and other students were invited to participate in a panel discussion. This much needed workshop for healthcare workers like us was well received by the attendees.
July 10-12 (2020)- TANPSYCON 2020
We, Department of Psychiatry of Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital along with the organizing committee of TANPSYCON, conducted the 35th Annual Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society- Tamil Nadu Chapter “TANPSYCON 2020” held in Puducherry. It was conducted as two days program with venue being Ocean Spray, Pondicherry. On day 1, sessions were presentations competing for Prof.Dr.M.Peter Fernandez Award for Psychiatrists, lecture on “Sexual Violence in Adults” by Dr.T.V.Asokan, Prof and Head, Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute and last presentation by Dr. Adarsh Tripathi, Additional Prof, King George’s medical institute, on “Non-Pharmacological Management of Common Sexual Dysfunctions”. Following this Inaugural Ceremony was conducted for the event. On day 2, sessions were oration by Dr.V.Jayanthini, Professor and Head of Psychiatry at Chettinad Medical college, speech on “Applications of Virtual Reality-Artificial Intelligence in Psychiatry” by Dr.SureshKumar.M, Consultant Psychiatrist, Psymed hospital and presentation on “Technology and Mental Well Being: Impact on Generation Z” by Dr.Jayanth Mahadevan, Assistant Prof, NIMHANS. The sessions were concluded with prize distribution for various competitions conducted in TANPSYCON. This one of a kind and novel virtual Annual Conference of TANPSYCON claimed highly appreciative comments from the participants. The efforts taken in organization were very fruitful overall.
January 28(2021)- Webinar series on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
A webinar series on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder was hosted by the Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manukula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital in 2021. It was a virtual event that explored different facets of OCD covered over 3 sessions with each session lasting for two hours starting from 10AM to 12Noon. Dr.Srinivas Balachander, Asst Prof, OCD Clinic, NIMHANS, lectured inthesesessions. The guest speaker presented a lecture in person in our college seminar hall during the last session, which was also made available online. These online seminars were attended by psychiatric postgraduates from a number of colleges. Each session received a significant number of postgraduates. The lectures covered OCD phenomenology and assessment, risk factors and aetiology, as well as pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options. Every class was followed with case scenarios and a discussion open to all online postgraduates. The postgraduates found all four sessions to be highly educational and interesting because they covered latest research in OCD. The whole event was well received and received positive reviews.
November 10(2019)- World Mental Health Day celebration
The Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manukula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital hosted “World Mental Health Day- Suicide Prevention” on November 10th, 2019. It was a one-day event conducted at the auditorium from 9AMto 2PM. Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and HOD of Psychiatry at SMVMCH, opened the session with a welcoming message. Shri.M.Dhanasekaran, Chairman and Managing Director of SMVE Trust, delivered the presidential speech, while Dr.S.Arun, Professor of Psychiatry, recognized and introduced the speaker. Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar’s address on “Suicide Prevalence and Risk” was fantastic. She emphasized on and described the necessary steps that must be taken to prevent suicide, for which her organization, SNEHA, has been helping victims for decades. Various events creating awareness of suicide like painting, skit, and mime were conducted. Stalls were arranged depicting the picture of suicide prevention. The participants were rewarded by the guest speaker.
December10 (2019)-“National Day for Mentally Challenged” Celebration
Department of Psychiatry, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital conducted an event for screening and assessment of Mentally Challenged children in a Rehabilitation Home. The venue was Baby Sarah Home for Disabled children at Ariyankuppam, Pondicherry. Multidisciplinary team including junior residents and faculties of Department of Psychiatry, CRRI, Clinical Psychologist and Social worker were part of this event. 50 Mentally challenged children were screened for other psychiatric and physical co-morbidity. The screening and evaluation were carried out by a group of psychiatrist consultants, junior residents, CRRI, Clinical Psychologist, and Social Worker. A total of 50 mentally challenged children were tested individually by a consultant, who supplemented his findings with information from the caregiver. Those children who were found to have mental co-morbidity were put on medication and sent to a clinical psychologist for an IQ test. ID with behavioral problem linked with stereotypy was discovered to be a major impairment. Following the screening and evaluation, the children were given a variety of fruits and play items. The entire crew joined them for lunch and provided entertainment by serving food. Finally, we assured them of our continued assistance and encouraged them to take advantage of the SMVMCH’s holistic treatment and free services.
September 12 (2019)-World Suicide Prevention Day
The Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manukula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital gave a guest lecture on “Suicide and its Prevention” on November 12th, 2019. It was a one-day event conducted at the MIT auditorium from 10AMto 2PM.Around 100 MBBS students, postgraduates from various department, faculties from the Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Nursing College students and Sri Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology students attended the lecture. The programme began Welcome Address by Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and HOD of Psychiatry at SMVMCH. Dr. Arul Varman discussed the incidence of suicide, how to identify and help those who are at risk of suicide, and various coping and problem-solving strategies. The presentation concluded with a question and answer session in which the audience was able to clarify their concerns. The audience reacted well to the lecture. The guest lecture was followed by a quiz competition, debateand other cultural activities for the nursing and MIT students. Students and faculties stated that they thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this event.

The Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital heldWorld Mental Health Day Celebration with theme- “Working Together to Prevent Suicide”on October 10th, 2018. It was a one-day event conducted at our college auditorium from 9AM to 12Noon. Around 200 undergraduate students from SMVMCH and nursing students from SMVNC along with postgraduates and faculties of Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH, participated in the event. Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry at SMVMCH, started the session with a welcome address. Shri.M.Dhanasekaran, Chairman and Managing Director of the SMVE Trust, delivered the presidential speech. Dr.Vikas Menon gave a mind-blowing speech on the current issue of “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.” He broadened our understanding of depression by describing its prevalence, symptoms and treatment options. Painting competitions were also held on this day. The guest speaker rewarded the participants as well. Participants stated that this whole session was highly informative after the event, and we were excited to answer their questions and connect with them throughout the session.
September 10 (2017) – World Suicide prevention day celebration
On this eventful day, Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital hosted a guest lecture on Pharmacogenomics and its application in psychiatry in medical educational unit around 10 AM to 12 Noon. Around 25 delegates including postgraduates and faculties from various medical colleges of Puducherry attended this event. This program focused on how patients responded to specific medications on their genetic profile. The guest lecture was delivered by Dr.Jaegan Chilakamarri who has been working in US and had done a lot of research in Pharmacogenomics. His speech was thought provoking and triggered great interest in the participants in the field of Pharmacogenomics. His lecture focused on various aspects of dosing, drug efficacy and adverse effects. The whole session was commented as very informative and inspiring one, with a good feedback from most participants.
September 21 (2017) – World Alzheimer’s day celebration
World Alzheimer’s day celebration was conducted at Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital Sub-Center at Villupuram by Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital, as an educative one-day program. Around 75 MBBS students from our college participated in this event along with postgraduates and faculties from Department of Psychiatry. As this year’s theme name goes like “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s”, focus was directed towards identifying dementia in population. Students were lectured on the importance of early identification and a brief note on psychiatric aspects of dementia. Also, rehabilitation and its importance in patients with dementia were addressed during the event along with demonstration of symptoms in dementia patients who visited our sub center during the day of event. Students’ feedback, post the event claimed this session to be a very informative and knowledgeable and we were intrigued to answer the queries and interact with them during the session.
October 10 (2017) – Mental Health Day celebration
Mental health day celebration of 2017 was organized by Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital ON October 10th, 2017. It was conducted in basement auditorium, SMVMCH. Around 150 nursing college students from SMVNC, postgraduates and faculties from Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH participated in this event. Profand HOD of Psychiatry, SMVMCH,Dr.R.Kumar gave a speech titled “Youth and Psychiatry in The Changing World.” Dr.K.S.Venkatarangan, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, educated the students on the importance of psychiatry and answered all of the students’ questions during the questioning session. Under the direction of nursing college Principal Mrs.Dhanusu.R, SMVNC nursing students performed a puppet play stressing the significance of adolescence and mental health. Participants’ reaction was overwhelmingly favorable and encouraging, with participants describing the speech given in the events extremely informative and easily intelligible.
November 11 (2017) – CME on Adolescent Psychiatry
On 11th of November, 2017, Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital conducted a CME themed “adolescent Psychiatry- Roses and Thorns”. This was a one-day event with venue being our hospital auditorium and this event focused on topics related to Adolescent Psychiatry. Challenging case discussions and lectures on topics related to adolescent psychiatry were part of this event. TNMC accreditation status for this event was 2 credit points. To begin with a lecture on internet addiction and its effect on various personality and psychiatric disorders was delivered by Dr.G.Ramanujam, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Thirunelveli Government Medical College. Next lecture was on “Substance Abuse in Adolescents” by Dr.Yamini Kannappan, Consultant Psychiatrist, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai. Followed by this interesting lecture was the speech by Dr.S.Nambi, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, Sree Balaji Medical College, Chennai, on “Forensic Aspects of Substance Use and NDPS Act”. A talk on “Adolescent Turmoil” was given by Dr. M.Malaiappan, Professor and head, Department of Psychiatry, Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. Dr.N.Shalini, Consultant Psychiatrist, Ullalayam-The Inner Temple Clinic, Chennai gave a lecture on “Age of the Raging Hormones” focusing on adolescent aggression. After this, Dr.Vikas Menon, Associate Professor, Jipmer, delivered his lecture on “Critical Issues in Management of Psychiatric Disorders in Adolescents” followed by a panel discussion. The whole session was very well appreciated by the participants and a very encouraging and positive feedback was given.
June 11 (2016) – Workshop on Hypnosis
On this special day, we, Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital, organized a “Workshop on Hypnosis” (one day workshop) with venue being our college itself. Around 50 delegates that included post graduates and faculties from various medical colleges participated in this event. Resource person for this event was Dr.Jini.K.Gopinath, Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Hypnotherapist, Head of Clinical Operations at Optum International, Bangalore. Dr.Jini.K.Gopinath started off this one day workshop giving a gist about historical aspects of hypnosis and its contemporary relevance. The work shop had two sessions with theoretical aspects covered in the first session along with a demonstration on one of the participants followed by the second half of the session where “Deepening Hypnotic Trance”, “Fast Induction Techniques”, “Self Hypnosis” and “Introduction to Hypnotherapy”, were covered. Participants who provided comments described the workshop as a clear and extremely educative session that brought many elements of hypnosis to light.
September 10 (2016) – World Suicide prevention day celebration
On 10th of September 2016, World Suicide prevention Day celebration was organized by Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Pondicherry. A guest lecture titled “Mind the Young Minds” was planned and held in basement auditorium, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital between 10Am- 12Noon. About 100 MBBS medical students, postgraduates and faculties from various departments attended the lecture where Mr.V.Sunil Kumar, Clinical Psychologist, Mind Zone, Chennai delivered a guest lecture about suicide and its prevention among young generation along with various factors associated with suicide and the ways to overcome the stress leading to suicidal decisions. The most interesting part of the lecture according to the participants was the delivery of the content in most interactive and interesting manner. The lecture had also left a positive note on the participants thus igniting the ray of awareness towards prevention of suicide.
October 10 (2016) – Mental Health Day celebration
On October 10th 2016, we, Department of Psychiatry of Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital hosted a day’s event with venue in college auditorium to celebrate Mental Health Day. Around 200 students of pre-final year and final year, MBBS along with postgraduates and faculties of Department of Psychiatry participated in this event organized in the Auditorium, SMVMCH. This event was conducted from 930AM to 1PM. Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and HOD, SMVMCH, hosted the UG quiz competition on this memorable day. An initial preliminary round was held, and four groups of three were formed. MCQ, AV round, Case Scenarioand Rapid Fire were the four rounds of questioning in the quiz. Dr.Rajagovindan.D, Director of SMVMCH rewarded the winner and runner with books and a cash prize. A poster competition for UGstudents was held to illustrate the subject of World Mental Health Day. Three of the ten posters received were chosen and awarded. Students were excited about the whole event and with their enthusiastic participation this event turned to be grand success.
November 25 (2016) – CME on Sex – myths and facts
Understanding the need for clarification in a highly stigmatized topic related to sexual disorders a one day CME titled “Sex- Myths and Facts” was conducted by Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital with venue being our college auditorium. This conference focused on the psychiatric and medical aspects of sexual disorders, as well as some insights into normal sexual behavior and the Indian viewpoint on homosexuality. Nearly 140 delegatesattended, including psychiatric postgraduates and consultants, clinical psychologists, and social workers. Dr.Ravi Philip Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Jipmer, gave a presentation on “Normal Sexuality” to kick off the event. Dr. Siva Nambi, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, Sree Balaji Medical College, Chennai, gave a comprehensive and factual address on “Sexual Abuse- Current Picture in India.” Dr.M.Jayasree, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SMVMCH, gave a speech on “Female Sexual Dysfunction.” Dr.T.Sathyanarayana Rao, Consultant Psychiatrist and Sexologist at JSS Medical College in Mysore, delivered a talk on “Psychiatric Aspects of Sexual Disorders.” Dr.Vijay Oza, Renal Transplant Surgeon at IGGGH and PGI, Puducherry gave a speech on “Male Sexual Dysfunction” next. Lastly a lecture on “Sex Education and Homosexuality-The Indian Perspective” was given by Dr. Shajahan Ismail, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Chettinad Hospitals and Research Institute which was finally followed by a panel discussion. It was mostly a clarifying session, and the attendees appear to have benefited from this event, as it focused on a less commonly discussed topic like this.
October 5 – 10 (2015) – Mental Health Week Celebration
Department of Psychiatry of Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital along with Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College hosted a 6 days event with venue in Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital to celebrate Mental Health Week. This event comprised of the Inauguration Ceremony on day 1, Off Campus Celebrations along with Mental Health Camp on day 2, visiting the FLSH Center and “Spending a Day with Mentally Challenged” on day 3, celebrating “Mental Health Awareness Among Nursing Students” on day 4 with various competitions for nursing students, prize distributions on day 5, and celebration of “World Mental Health Day” in the department on day 6. We were fortunate to listen to Dr.Ashok Kumar, Professor of Department of Psychiatry, Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, who gave a scintillating speech on “Substance Abuse-The Unmet Challenge” during the inauguration ceremony. We also had very informative speech on this year’s theme “Dignity in Psychiatry” on Day 1 and a lecture on “Stigma against Mentally Ill” by Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry. This year’s WHO aim of raising awareness to ensure people with mental health conditions to continue to live with dignity and training health professionals was accomplished through this event in our hospital. Overall experience of this event by the students and other faculties was very applauding.
September 10 (2015) – World Suicide Prevention Day Celebration
World suicide prevention day 2015 was conducted by Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital, in Auditorium as an interactive session and 215 MIT students participated in this program. This event was conducted from 9AM to 1PM. Suicidal ideations being more common in adolescent population, this event was conducted as an effort to spread awareness in the student population. This was achieved through a lecture addressing in particular the identifiable risk factors by any common man about the suicidal ideations in adolescent population. The lecture was delivered by Dr.K.Vinoth, Asst. Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH. Many queries were raised during this event, and the interest among students of MIT truly surprised us on how students were ready to come forward and discuss about this much needed topic of the hour and we were amazed by this event turning out to be a grand success.
November 27 (2015) – CME on Child Psychiatry
We, Department of Psychiatry, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Medical College and Hospital successfully organized and conducted a CME titled “Child Psychiatry- Understanding the Juvenile Jigsaw” with TNMC Accreditation of two credit points with venue for this event being our hospital. Nearly 150 postgraduates and consultants of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, clinical psychologists and social workers came along to participate in this CME. It was one day program with lectures related to Child Psychiatry through use of challenging case scenario discussions. To begin with an enlightening lecture on “Child Sexual Abuse” was delivered by Dr.T.V.Asokan, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SRM Medical College, Chennai addressing the long term effects of child sexual abuse. Followed by a very informative lecture on “ADHD-Current Management Strategies and Differential Diagnosis” by Dr.V.Jayanthini, Professor and Head in Psychiatry at Chettinad Medical college, Chennai. Next lecture was given by Dr.K.Raman, Associate Professor, Saveetha Medical College, Chennai, about “School Refusal”. After this was a talk on “Childhood Bipolar Disorder” by Dr. Shanthi Nambi, Professor and Head, Department of Child Psychiatry, ICH, Chennai. Next scintillating speech on “Autism Spectrum Disorder” was given by Dr.Preethi Kandasamy. Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and Head, SMVMCH, gave the final lecture of this event titled “The Art of Good Parenting”. Following the lectures there was a panel discussion. The comments given by participants were positive and very heartening as their feedback stated the lectures to be very informative, easily comprehensible and interactive.
