Department of Neuro Surgery

Overview

The department provides one of the best round the clock neurosurgery (brain and spine) services in and around Pondicherry and Tamilnadu. The department has a well furnished outpatient department with working hours from 8.30 am to 4 pm daily except Sundays. A dedicated modern Operation Theatre is available with modern equipments, instruments and trained staff nurses. A separate Operation Theatre is available for handling neuro-emergency cases. The department is well supported by an Intensive Care Unit, equipped with modern ventilators and monitors, and managed by anaesthesiologists, trained neuro staff, physiotherapists and paramedical staff. Round the clock services are provided for all inpatients and neuro-emergency cases. At present the department offers services in Neuro trauma, Neuro-oncology, Paediatric Neurosurgery, Neuro vascular and spine surgery (open and minimally invasive). There is a vision of further developing the department into an advanced brain and spine center by expanding the services to involve Neuro endoscopy, Functional Neurosurgery and Stereotactic procedures.

  • Neurotrauma care : brain – decompressive craniectomy, cranioplasty, anterior cranial fossa repair, vp shunt spine – cervical traction, fracture stabilization (open and minimally invasive techniques), decompressive laminectomies
  • Neuro-oncology : craniotomy and excision of both benign and malignant tumors
  • Paediatric neurosurgery : surgeries for hydrocehpalus , brain tumors, brain and spine infections, arnold chiari malformations, meningocele/meningomyelocele
  • Skull base surgery : surgeries for cp angle tumors, trigeminal schwannomas, skull base meningiomas, trigeminal neuralgia
  • Neurovascular surgery : clipping of aneurysms, excision of arteriovenous malformations (avms), decompressive craniectomy for stroke, intracranial hemorrhage evacuation
  • Spinal disorders : surgeries for spine tumors (intra and extra medullary), cv junction anamolies, anterior cervical discectomy/corpectomy and fusion, cervical and lumbar disc surgeries, deformity corrections, spine trauma and infections, open and minimally invasive spine procedures
  • Epilepsy surgeries

Academics

The department trains both undergraduates and post graduates. Post graduates from Emergency medicine, General surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and ENT come for regular training program. The department is planning for starting MCh Neurosurgery course in the near future.
