Workshop Overview:

The workshop on “Blueprinting and Competency Mapping” was organized to enhance participants’ skills in educational assessment and competency measurement, focusing on practical applications within the academic and clinical settings.

Workshop Sessions:

– Registration and Pretest: Conducted before each session to assess participants’ initial knowledge levels.

Educational Content:

  • Blueprinting in Educational Assessment: A session that introduced the concept of blueprinting and its application in educational assessments.
  • Mapping Module: Detailed explanation of the module used to measure competency attainment, including:
    • Stages of the mapping module
    • Alignment of graduate attributes with program-specific objectives and competencies.
  • Hands-on Training: Practical sessions where participants received training on:
    • Initial and final competency attainment
    • Measuring competency attainment.
  • Demonstration of Program-Specific Objectives (PSO) attainment and the mapping of graduate attributes.

– Feedback and Certification:

  • Participant feedback was collected to evaluate the workshop’s effectiveness.
  • Certificates were distributed to all participants, acknowledging their participation and completion of the workshop.
  • The participants obtained a pretest and post score of 7 and 8.27 respectively.

The workshop provided valuable insights and practical experience in blueprinting and competency mapping, contributing to the professional development of the attending faculty and clinical staff.

Workshop on “Launching E-Course in Moodle LMS”

Workshop on “Launching E-Course in Moodle LMS” 23rd July 2024

A workshop on “Launching E-Course in MOODLE LMS” was organized by the MEU in collaboration with IQAC on 23rd July 2024 at the first floor own book reading hall, SMVMCH. The workshop was planned with the prime objectives to orient the faculty to the updated verison of LMS, new ICT tools that can be utilised for interactive lectures and also to obtain a hands on training on launching E-Course in MOODLE LMS. The program began with an orientation session to LMS by Dr.R.Udhayasankar, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, SMVMCH. Later, Dr.S.Arunmozhi, Professor and Head, Department of ECE, Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology, Puducherry elaborated on various ICT tools like mentimeter, quizlet and others for planning interactive lectures. Dr.Deepika.V, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology explained the process of launching E-Course in MOODLE LMS. The afternoon session was fully dedicated for the hands on training session, where the participants were motivated to do enrollment, adding e-contents, assessments and certificate generation for a course in our institutional LMS.

The mean pre-test and post-test scores obtained by the participants were 4.91 and 8.17 respectively. The participants considered the program interesting and interactive and recommended conduct of focused workshops on different methods of game based learning. They also recommended a dedicated workshop on drafting time table.

A FDP on “Next Gen Teaching Excellence: Game Based Learning and Masterful Timetable crafting for Medical Educators” was organized by the MEU in collaboration with IQAC on 18th July 2024 at the first floor own book reading hall, SMVMCH. The workshop was planned with the prime objectives to orient the faculty to different strategies of game based learning and to enable them to choose appropriate tool for their routine teaching and learning. Also the FDP was aimed to strengthen the faculty in drafting timetable using GMER 2023 regulations with google sheets as ICT tools. The program began with an ice breaking session for the participants by Dr.K.Soundariya. Later, Dr.M.P.Brundha, Professor, Department of Pathology, Madha Medical College elaborated the participants on the essentials of game based learning. The different kind of games were introduced to the participants, namely “Crazy cards”, “Bingo Puzzle”, “ C the I” (Complete the Incomplete) etc. The session was later followed by elaboration of steps in framing the time table and effective usage of google sheets for the implementation of the timetable. The afternoon session was fully dedicated for the hands on training session, where the participants were motivated to prepare resources for the game based learning and also had hands on experience in using google sheets for drafting time table. Dr.K.Soundariya, Dr.V.Deepika and Dr.R.Udhayasankar were the facilitators for the group activity.

To organize every 6months with new ideas and participants can also be asked to come up with new ideas

Overview

The Orientation Program for Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) took place from 25th to 28th June 2024 at College Lecture Hall 4. The program aimed to equip 135 medical interns with essential skills and knowledge necessary for their internship period. Organized as a workshop, the event covered various aspects critical to professional patient care, ethical practices, and hospital procedures.

In addition to the orientation sessions, there was extensive hands-on skills training sessions in the simulation centre for all the students in rotation for the following skills:

b) Medicolegal documentation skills
c) Basic surgical skills
d) Communication skills
e) Prescription skills, documentation skills and demonstration of fire safety
Pretest and post test were conducted for the individual skill modules and the students were assessed with a validated checklist

Feedback and Certificates

The program concluded with a feedback session to gauge participant satisfaction and gather suggestions for improvement.

Conclusion:

The Orientation Program for CRMI provided a comprehensive foundation for medical interns, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for their upcoming rotations. The engagement of experienced faculty ensured that participants were well-prepared to begin their internships with confidence.

Report on Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Workplace Based Assessment”

Participants: 39 faculty comprising professors, associate professors, and assistant professors from various departments.

Objective and Nature of the Program:

The Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Workplace Based Assessment (WBPA) was held on 2nd July, 2024, at the first floor own book reading hall. The workshop aimed to familiarize faculty members with various aspects of Workplace Based Assessment and equip them with skills to design effective assessment programs.

Session Highlights:

  1. Introduction and Importance of Workplace Based Assessment: V. Murugan, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine at MAPIMS, provided insights into the significance of WBPA in educational settings.
  2. Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX): G. K. Poomalar, Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, conducted a session on designing and implementing mini-CEX assessments. The session comprised of a role play depicting the importance of “Workplace Based Assessment”
  3. Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS): S. Girija, Professor and Head of the Department of General Medicine at SMVMCH, guided participants on the principles and practices of DOPS assessments. The essential resources on DOPS were shared with the participants
  4. Case-Based Discussion: T. Preethi, Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at SMVMCH led a session on structuring case-based discussions for WBPA.
  5. Multi-Source Feedback (MSF): K. Karthikeyan, Dean Academic at SMVMCH, concluded with a session on utilizing “Multi Sources Feedback” (MSF) for comprehensive assessment strategies.

Activities:

Each session included hands-on activities where participants actively engaged in designing modules for WBPA, ensuring practical application of the concepts discussed.

Outcome:

Participants actively contributed to discussions and activities throughout the workshop. Feedback from attendees highlighted a deeper understanding of WBPA methodologies and enhanced confidence in designing assessment frameworks.

Conclusion:

The FDP on Workplace Based Assessment was successful in achieving its objectives of enhancing faculty skills in assessment, design and implementation. Certificates were distributed to all participants in recognition of their participation and contribution to the program.

Recommendations:

Based on feedback received, future workshops could explore more advanced topics within WBPA and include case studies from diverse clinical and educational contexts.

Faculty Development Program on “Orientation cum Sensitization to CBME”

Overview: A three-day FDP titled “Orientation cum Sensitization to CBME” was held from 8th to 10th May 2024 at the MEU Hall, College Block, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital. The event focused on sensitizing and providing an orientation on Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) to 28 participants, including Assistant Professors and Senior Residents from various departments.
Organizers: The workshop was organized by Dr.T.Mangaiyarkarasi, Professor, Department of Microbiology with coordination by Dr.K. Soundariya, the MEU Coordinator at SMVMCH.
Program Details: The workshop featured a series of presentations and sessions led by distinguished faculty members, tailored to deepen the understanding of CBME and enhance teaching methodologies suitable for medical education.

The mean pre and post test scores obtained were 7.05 and 7.35 respectively

Educational Sessions and Speakers

  • Dr. S. Arunmozhi, Professor and Head of the Department of ECE at Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology, discussed innovative educational tools such as ED puzzle, Ed.ted.com, and H5P for Moodle. He also provided an introduction to SCORM packages and open education resources, enhancing the faculty’s capability to develop and implement interactive learning environments.
  • Mr. Rajesh and Dr. Udhayasankar, Associate Professor from the Department of Microbiology, SMVCH, led a practical session on “Designing E-Poster & E-Certificate using CANVA and Bulk Email of E-Certificates using ‘AUTOCRAT’.” This session was particularly focused on empowering faculty to create visually appealing educational materials and efficiently distribute them.
  • Dr. Raja B, Manager I.T, SMVCH, along with Dr. Udhayasankar, explored “Artificial Intelligence tools of Microsoft, COPILOT, and Clip champ for audio and video editing and creation.” They demonstrated how AI tools can be leveraged to enhance content delivery and engage students more effectively in a digital learning environment

The workshop concluded with a feedback session from the participants, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of the workshop and areas for improvement. Certificates were distributed to all participants, acknowledging their active involvement and learning achieved during the workshop.

Conclusion

The workshop successfully met its objective of acquainting SMVMCH faculty with key digital tools and artificial intelligence applications pertinent to medical education. The sessions were both informative and practical, offering hands-on experiences that faculty members can integrate into their teaching methodologies. The positive feedback highlighted the relevance of the topics covered and the faculty’s eagerness to incorporate these new tools into their educational practices to enhance student learning outcomes. The Mean Pre-Test and Post test score were 8.56 and 10.64 respectively. The success of this workshop paves the way for future sessions that could further explore advanced applications of technology in education.

Revised Basic Course Workshop in Medical Education

The 4th Revised Basic Course workshop and AETCOM in ‘Medical Education Technologies’ was held between 18th – 20th January 2023 under the observation of Dr.Nivedita Nanda, Additional Professor, Department of Biochemistry, NMC Regional Centre, JIPMER, Puducherry-605006. A total of 28 senior, mid and junior level faculties from our institute participated in the workshop. The 3-day workshop was organized as per the guidelines of NMC. The program was conducted in the newly constructed “Medical Education Unit”. The sessions were interactive, with group activities for participants. The workshop was evaluated by the observer and the feedback was obtained from the participants.

Feedback Analysis

  • New resource faculty can be added for the next RBCW as per the new guidelines released by NMC
  • Planning of sensitization session to the Smart Board installed in the new MEU, for its effective usage by the resource faculty
  • In general, the resource faculty were requested to include adequate group activities for their respective sessions to make it more interactive and for promoting active participation

Action Taken

  • Dr.Soundariya prepared the list of members who can be newly added in the MEU and the same was approved by the members in the MEU meeting
  • It was decided to conduct a session on the “Handling of Smart Board” in the last week of April, 2023.

Workshop on “Planning and Execution of OSPE and OSCE”

The MEU in collaboration with the Simulation Centre of SMVMCH organized a half-day workshop on “Planning and Execution of OSPE and OSCE” for around 25 participants, comprising of Postgraduates and faculty of Medicine department of SMVMCH on 22.03.2023 at the Simulation Centre of SMVMCH. Dr.Soundariya inaugurated the session and highlighted the essentials of OSPE and OSCE in the CBME curriculum. Dr.M.Jayasree, Coordinator, Simulation Centre SMVMCH facilitated the sessions. The resource faculty enlightened the participants on selecting the skills to be assessed by OSCE, Key components in running an OSCE and reporting the results of OSCE. The participants were shown a live demonstration of 5 OSCE stations on various skills and it was well appreciated by participants. There was a debriefing session and the resource faculty addressed all the queries of the participants. The sessions were highly interactive and positive feedback was obtained from the participants.

Feedback Analysis

  • The practical constraints in conducting the OSCE was well discussed
  • Dr.Girija.S, Professor and HOD, Department of General Medicine requested overview of the conduction of OSCE during ward leaving exams, by the MEU and the coordinator of Simulation Centre for betterment of the same
  • It was insisted on organizing similar workshops for other clinical departments in turns to facilitate sensitisation for STEP-2 of NEXT.

Action Taken

  • The suggestions were discussed with dean and it was decided to first obtain the station scenarios from the clinical departments followed by fixing of slots for the conduct of the workshop

Workshop on Learning Management System

The Medical Education Unit, organized a Half Day workshop on “Learning Management System” for the faculty of SMVMCH representing different departments along with their supporting staff on 18.04.2023, at new digital lab, SMVMCH. Around 40 participants comprising of faculty and the supporting staff contributed actively in the workshop. They were oriented to the following components: updating the LMS with resource materials in both UG and PG courses, uploading of voice over power points/ faculty video lectures in the LMS, updating the question bank in LMS and backing up of the data of LMS. The participants had an intense hands-on training on uploading the events in the calendar of LMS, creating page, question bank and uploading resources in the LMS. The sessions were highly interactive. Feedback was obtained from all the participants. The participants rated the sessions interactive and frequent reinforcement sessions on the utility of LMS.

Workshop on Mapping Module for measuring Competency Attainment

The MEU organized a half day “Workshop on Mapping Module for measuring Competency Attainment” with hands on training for the faculty and supporting staff of SMVMCH on 03.07.23. The blueprint, terminologies and the basic requisites for mapping process were explained by Dr.K.Soundariya. Around 40 participants inclusive of faculty and supporting staff attended the workshop and showed active participation. The faculty were explained the different stages of mapping module. They started with the mapping of the program specific outcomes with the Indian Medical Graduate attributes. Later Dr.Deepika facilitated the intense hands on training sessions on measuring the initial and final competency attainment, with the help of the University results. Positive feedback was obtained from the participants and they requested sharing of the essential steps in Mapping Module to all the participants. Frequent reinforcement sessions were recommended by the participants of the workshop.

The MEU organized a half day workshop with hands on training on “IMPACT: Innovations for Mastery in Professional and Competency-based Training – Workshop on E-Portfolio” for the faculty of SMVMCH on 03.10.2023. The Dean inaugurated the session, by highlighting the essentials of E-portfolio and its implications. Dr.Jagan Mohan.R, Deputy Director, Centre for Digital Resources, Education and Medical Informatics (C-DREAMS), Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Puducherry facilitated the session. The resource faculty enlightened the participants with the principles of CBME and the role of E-portfolios and Learning Management System in the assessment of competencies. There was a hands-on training session on the Canva LMS by all the participants to ease the implementation of the E-Portfolio for the undergraduate students. Around 26 faculty comprising of all Phase I faculty and Mentors of Phase II attended the workshop and showed active participation. Positive feedback was obtained from the participants and they requested for a full day workshop for an effective hands-on training session.

Orientation cum Sensitization Program to CBME for newly joined faculty

The MEU, organized a 3-day “Orientation cum sensitization program to CBME” for the newly joined faculties of SMVMCH on 25th, 26th and 27th October 2022, afternoon 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM. Program was targeted for newly joined faculties in 2 different sessions (this being first session with 26 new faculties). First day of the program provided an Orientation to the institution, their duties and responsibilities, overview of various committee proceedings (including medical education unit, Research committee and ethics committee) in our institution. Second and third day of program covered sensitization to CBME, interactive TL methods, lesson plan, assessment and feedback. Participants actively participated in group activities in all these sessions. The sessions were highly interactive and feedback has been obtained from all the participants. This program was awarded 2 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

Orientation Session on National Education Policy

On November 10, 2023, an Orientation session was conducted by MEU in collaboration with IQAC at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital to underscore the significance of the “National Education Policy” by Dr.Sivasakthy Manivasakam, Director, Institute of health profession Education. The session aimed to enlighten Administrators, Head of the Department, administrative staff about the transformative changes and objectives outlined in the National Education Policy. Dr.Deepika.V, IQAC coordinator gave the welcome address, Dr.K.Karthikeyan, Dean Academic felicitated the guest speaker and Dr.K.Soundariya, MEU Coordinator, gave the Vote of Thanks.

The session focused on key aspects of the National Education Policy. The sensitization session incorporated interactive elements, including Q&A sessions and group discussions. Participants actively engaged with the content, expressing their thoughts and seeking clarification on various aspects of the National Education Policy.

Programs for Undergraduates

II Professional Year Orientation Program

A one-day orientation program was organized by the MEU for the 2nd year undergraduates (CBME Batch 2021-22) on 27.02.2023. The students were oriented to the clinical departments, Clinical postings and Phase II departments. An orientation session was also delivered by Dean Academic on “NEXT” regulations for the benefit of students. The mentees were allotted mentors from Phase II faculty and a formal introductory meet happened between the mentors and mentee in the afternoon session, as a part of Student Support System.

Orientation Program for “Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship” (CRMI) and Skills training session

With the implementation of new CRMI regulations, a 4-day orientation program for “Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship”, under the guidance of IQAC, was organized for the Interns of 2018 Batch from 4th to 7th July 2023. The sessions were conducted with the objectives to offer formal orientation to roles, responsibilities and rules for CRMI at SMVMCH, the infrastructure, scope of the hospital, to ensure revision of basic clinical skills such as history taking, laboratory investigation, patient’s rights and responsibilities and prescription of rational drugs in patient care, services of blood bank and laboratory, the role of documentation in patient care, the standard practices in universal precautions and waste disposal , documentation and ethics in professional patient care, the ICU protocol and COVID Hospital Protocol. On all the four days, the participants were exposed to five skills training modules namely “Basic Medical Skills”, “Basic Surgical Skills”, “Communication Skills”, “Basic Life Support” and Prescription Audit, Clinical Audit and Fire safety demonstration for all the interns in small groups. During the skills training session, the students had an intensive hands-on training on different skills. The sessions were highly interactive and overall, good feedback was obtained from the participants.

Programs for Postgraduates

PG Orientation Program

A one-day orientation program was organized by the MEU for the 1st year postgraduates on 16.10.2023. Dr.K.Karthikeyan, Dean Academic elaborated on the Rules and Regulations. The postgraduates were later oriented to the Simulation centre and the implications of BLS and ACLS training. They were oriented to the Library by Mr.Elango and it was accompanied by a Library visit by the postgraduates. Dr.Mangaiyarkarasi.T highlighted on the essentials of Immnunisation for the postgraduates. Following these session, a medical health check up was arranged for all the postgraduates under the supervision of Dr.A.Ramya.

Workshop on “Basic presentation and teaching skills and Orientation to CBME” for postgraduates

The Medical Education unit of SMVMCH, organized a 2-day workshop on “Basic presentation and teaching skills and Orientation to CBME” for all the second year postgraduates of SMVMCH, conducted in two batches, the first batch on 30th-31st October, 2023 and the second batch on 2nd & 3rd November, 2023. The program was organized to provide an orientation to the postgraduates about the rules, assessment plan and deliverables during the post-graduation course. The program also oriented them about seminars and journal club and provided guidance in planning during the preparatory phase and tips for improving their presentation skills. The program also gave an overview about the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum and highlighted the goals, roles and competencies of Indian Medical Graduates to them.

A dedicated session on skills training incorporating Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and soft skills such as Communication skills, teaching clinical history taking and breaking bad news was conducted which was highly appreciated by the participants. The highlight of the Workshop was Micro teaching session in small groups in which the participants could apply the learning from the Workshop and could showcase the teaching skills of the participants.

The participants enthusiastically participated and the sessions were highly interactive. The mean Pretest and Post test scores were 3.22 and 6.61 for A Batch and 3.54 and 6.4 for B Batch respectively. The workshop has been awarded 4 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council. Overall a good feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Workshop on “Learning Management System”

The Medical Education Unit, organized a 4-day workshop on “Learning Management System” for the faculty of SMVMCH. Around 22 faculty participated in the workshop. They were oriented to the uses of “Learning management system” (LMS) and key components of LMS. The participants had an intense hands-on training on uploading the events in the calendar of LMS, creating page, question bank and uploading resources in the LMS. The sessions were highly interactive. Feedback was obtained from all the participants. The participants rated the sessions interactive and demanded future sessions for exploration of other components of LMS. The Workshop has been awarded 1 credit point by the TamilNadu Medical Council.

Workshop on Mapping Module for measuring Competency Attainment

The MEU organized a half day workshop with hands on training on “Mapping Module for measuring competency attainment” for the faculty of SMVMCH on 17.02.2022. The Dean and Dean Research inaugurated the session, by highlighting the essentials of mapping module and its implications. Dr.S.Nitya and Mrs.R.Rajarajeswari, from Phase II and Phase I respectively, shared their experience in the implementation of the Mapping module for the CBME batches 2019 & 2020. The terminologies and the basic requisites were explained by Dr.K.Soundariya. Around 20 Phase II and Phase III Part I faculty along with their HODs, attended the workshop and showed active participation. The faculty were explained the different stages of mapping module. They started with the mapping of the program specific outcomes with the Indian Medical Graduate attributes. Later Dr.Deepika facilitated the intense hands on training sessions on measuring the competency attainment. The major outcome of the program was the refinement of the program specific outcomes in alignment with the graduate attributes.Positive feedback was obtained from the participants and they requested for a full day workshop for an effective hands-on training session. The workshop was been awarded 1 credit hour by the Tamil Nādu Medical Council.

Quality Enhancement Workshop on Mapping Module

The MEU and IQAC organized a full day “Quality Enhancement Workshop on Mapping Module” with hands on training for the faculty of SMVMCH on 29.03.2022. The Dean and Dean Research inaugurated the session, by highlighting the essentials of mapping module and its implications. Dr.S.Asmathulla and Dr.S.Nitya from Phase I and Phase II respectively, shared their experience in the implementation of the Mapping module for the CBME batches 2019 & 2020. The blueprint, terminologies and the basic requisites for mapping process were explained by Dr.K.Soundariya. Around 19 faculty inclusive of HODs, Unit Chiefs and Registrars of Phase III Part II departments (General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics) attended the workshop and showed active participation. The faculty were explained the different stages of mapping module. They started with the mapping of the program specific outcomes with the Indian Medical Graduate attributes. Later Dr.Deepika facilitated the intense hands on training sessions on measuring the competency attainment. The major outcome of the program was the refinement of the program specific outcomes in alignment with the graduate attributes. The Clinical departments made phase wise mapping of competencies with the Program Specific Outcomes and Indian Medical Graduate Attributes. Positive feedback was obtained from the participants and they requested sharing of the essential steps in Mapping Module to all the participants. The workshop was awarded 1 credit hour by the Tamil Nādu Medical Council.

Revised Basic Course Workshop in Medical Education

The 3rd Revised Basic Course workshop and AETCOM in ‘Medical Education Technologies’ was held between 7th – 9th April 2022 under the observation of Dr.J.Sree Rekha, NMC Regional Centre, JIPMER, Puducherry-605006. A total of 28 senior, mid and junior level faculties from our institute participated in the workshop. The 3-day workshop was organized as per the guidelines of NMC, following all the COVID safety precautions. The sessions were interactive, with group activities for participants. The workshop was evaluated by the observer and the feedback was obtained from the participants.

The MEU organized a half day “Workshop on Reflective Practices in Teaching, Learning” for the faculty of SMVMCH on 27.07.2022. The Dean Academic inaugurated the session, by highlighting the importance of “Reflective Writing” in CBME Curriculum. Dr.G.Sivaraman, Additional Professor, Department of ENT, JIPMER and Dr.P.Pasupathy, Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, JIPMER facilitated the sessions of the workshop. There were totally 36 participants in the workshop, representing around 20 departments. The resource faculty highlighted the essentials of Reflective Writing. The participants were divided into groups and they were asked to reflect on different articles (Reflections by different authors). The facilitators discussed about “Gibb’s Reflective Cycle” in detail along with the discussion over different templates. Overall, it was an interactive session and good feedback was obtained from the participants. The workshop was awarded 1 credit hour by the Tamil Nādu Medical Council.

Faculty Development Program on “Interactive Teaching learning Methods – An Update”

The MEU organized a half day Faculty Development Program on “Interactive Teaching Learning Methods – An Update” for the faculty of SMVMCH on 30.09.2022. The Dean inaugurated the session, by highlighting the importance of “Interactive Teaching Learning Methods” in promoting active learning among students. There were totally 36 participants in the workshop, representing around 20 departments. The first was the “Ice breaking session” led by Dr.K.Soundariya, where the faculty were exposed to different Teaching Learning Methods and resources through “Connexions” game and “Dumb sharades”. This was followed by an interactive session on “Flipped Classroom” by Dr.Nishanthi. Dr.Nishanthi shared her experience on “Flipped Classroom” conducted on a topic in Pharmacology. Later, Dr.Kalaiselvan enlightened the participants with the “Self-Directed Learning” Module, designed for “National Health Programs” in Community Medicine. Overall, it was an interactive session and good feedback was obtained from the participants. The workshop was awarded 1 credit hour by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

The MEU in collaboration with the Simulation Centre of SMVMCH organized a full-day workshop on “Planning and Execution of OSPE and OSCE” for around 37 faculty of SMVMCH, involving nearly 20 departments on 28.10.2022 at the Simulation Centre of SMVMCH. Dean Research inaugurated the session and highlighted the essentials of OSPE and OSCE in the CBME curriculum. Dr.V.N.Mahalakshmi, Dean-HPE and Dr.Arun Daniel J, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine from Aarupadai Veedu Medical College facilitated the sessions. The resource faculty enlightened the participants on selecting the skills to be assessed by OSCE, Blueprinting on OSCE, Key components in running an OSCE and reporting the results of OSCE. The participants were shown a live demonstration of 6 OSCE stations on various skills, attended by interns and it was well appreciated by participants. There was a debriefing session and the resource faculty addressed all the queries of the participants. The sessions were highly interactive and the workshop was awarded 2 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

Workshop on E-content and E-Course Development

The MEU, organized a full-day workshop on “E-Content and E-Course Development” for the faculty of SMVMCH on 21st December, 2022. The program was organized to provide an intensive hands-on training on the various ICT enabled tools that can be effectively utilized for effective teaching, learning and assessment. Around 28 faculty were oriented to the different ICT enabled tools and the multimedia principles. The participants enthusiastically participated in the hands-on training sessions on development of interactive images, creating animations, creating interactive PowerPoint presentations, conducting interactive online quizzes for large group. A session was exclusively dedicated for the participants to explore the institutional “Learning Management System”. An afternoon session was exclusively dedicated in sensitizing the participants towards “Instructional Design Models” involved in E-Course development and hands on experience was given on developing a template for E-course using MOODLE. The sessions were highly interactive and feedback has been obtained from all the participants. The workshop has been awarded 2 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

The sessions were conducted with the objectives tooffer formal orientation to roles, responsibilities and rules for CRRI at SMVMCH, the infrastructure, scope of the hospital, to ensure revision of basic clinical skills such as history taking, laboratory investigation, patient’s rights and responsibilities and prescription of rational drugs in patient care, services of blood bank and laboratory, the role of documentation in patient care, the standard practices in universal precautions and waste disposal , Medico-legal issues, documentation and ethics in professional patient care, the ICU protocol, COVID Hospital Protocol and the fire safety in hospital and college. The students were given demonstration on “Fire Safety” and “Donning and Doffing of the Personal Protective Equipment”. The sessions were highly interactive and students gave positive feedback with suggestions for sessions on time management.

Simulation Based Medical Education

Faculty Development Program on ‘Simulation based Medical Education’ was held on 2nd February, 2021, at the basement Lecture Hall, Hospital for the inhouse faculty of SMVMCH and was facilitated by Dr. Dinker Pai, Professor of Surgery and Director, Simulation Centre, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute.

Workshop on ‘Learning Management System’

The workshop on “Learning Management System”was held on15th February, 2021, at the MEU hall for the Faculty of SMVMCH. There were 27 participants, with at least 2 representatives from each department, who got oriented to the LMS and had a hands on experience on “Creating the events in Calendar of LMS” and “Creation of Question Bank”, at the Digital Lab. Mr.Raja, IT Manager, Dr.N.Suresh and Dr.Udhayashankar facilitated the sessions. The participants were requested to update the details in the LMS. At the end of the session the feedback was obtained from all the participants.

The workshop on “Assessment in CBME” was organized by MEU on 17.02.2021 for the faculty of Phase I and Phase II of SMVMCH. Around 16 faculty participated in the workshop and had a rich hands on experience in framing LAQ,SAQ and Blueprinting in Assessment, facilitated by Dr.Jayasree and Dr.K.Soundariya. Dr.Karthikeyan gave an overview of “Assessment in CBME” and Dr.G.Kalaiselvan gave an overview of Formative assessment “Tools & Techniques”. Feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Revised Basic Course workshop and AETCOMin ‘Medical Education Technologies’ was held on 16h-18thMarch 2021 under the observation of Dr.T.Mahalakshmy Convener, MCI Regional Centre, JIPMER, Puducherry-605006. A total of 28 senior, mid and junior level faculties from our institute participated in the workshop. The 3-day workshop was organized as per the guidelines of NMC, following all the COVID safety precautions. The sessions were interactive, with group activities for participants. The workshop was evaluated by the observer and the feedback was obtained from the participants in each workshop.

Workshop on “Blueprinting in Assessment” and “Hand on training on Competency Mapping”

This workshop was organized on 7th April 2021, at MEU meeting Hall, College Block for the faculty of SMVMCH. The sessions were facilitated byDr.Soundariya K, Professor of Physiology, Dr.Deepika , Assistant Professor of Physiology, Dr.Suresh.N, Associate Professor, Department of Anatomy and Dr.G.Kalaiselvan, Professor of Community Medicine, SMVMCH. Around 25 faculty participated in the workshop, and had a hands on experience in framing Blueprint and measuring competency attainment. Blueprint templates were shared with all the participants. Feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Workshop on “How to open a youtube channel”

A workshop was held on “How to open a you tube channel” on 18.06.21 to the inhouse faculty of SMVMCH, by MEU. Mr.Balakrishna Pai, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, facilitated the session. Around 29 faculty participated in the workshop and had hands on training on “Creating a YouTube channel” in the digital lab. The session was interactive and feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Workshop on Mentoring

An online workshop on “Mentoring” was organized for the coordinators of Student Support System, and the mentors of Phase II & III on 28.06.21. Mr.Anand.K.M , Senior Grade Lecturer of Melaka Manipal Medical College, was the invited faculty for the session. The program was carried on for 3 hours in online mode, with 2 group activities enlightening the challenges faced during the mentorship. It was conducted using Great Learning Platform and breakout rooms were utilized for the group activities. The sessions were highly interactive and feedback was obtained from all the participants. The program was awarded 1 credit hour by the TN Medical Council.

Programs for Undergraduates

Undergraduate Orientation program (2020-2021 batch): Due to COVID, the foundation course for the CBME batch 2020-21 was planned to be organized longitudinally throughout the year. The orientation modulewas planned as a four day programand was held between 27th -30th , January 2021. The program started with the introduction by the Deputy Director / Dean. Sessions on “Reflective Writing” was newly introduced in the program and was facilitated by Dr.Jayasree. Feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Orientation Program for 2nd Year Undergraduates

A one-day orientation program was organized by the MEU for the 2nd year undergraduates (CBME Batch 2019-20). The students were oriented to the clinical departments, Clinical postings and Phase II departments. The mentees were allotted mentors from Phase II faculty and a formal introductory meet happened between the mentors and mentee in the afternoon session.

Webinar on “Equip Yourself for the COVID 19 Era”

A webinar was planned for the medical undergraduates and interested faculty of SMVMCH in collaboration with ISHA Yoga, entitled “Equip Yourself for the COVID-19 Era”. Around 364 students participated online for this 90-minute session via the Great Learning Platform. Mrs. Archana from ISHA Yoga enlightened the students with the benefits of Yoga and they were sensitized with 3 kriyas that helps to promote health and boost the Immunity.

As a part of it, a webinar on “Preserving Mental Health of Medical Students amidst COVID-19 Pandemic” was organized by the MEU and Department of Psychiatry for the Phase II and Phase III Medical Students, in view of the feedback received from them. Dr.Vikas Menon, Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry delivered the webinar for around 300 undergraduate students of SMVMCH, through the great learning platform. He gave the students tips for stress management during this COVID Pandemic. It was an interactive webinar and that lasted for 120 minutes and a good feedback has been obtained from the students.

Intern Orientation Program

A 2-day Intern Orientation Program was organized for the students’ of 2016 batch on 29.07.2021 and 30.07.2021. The program was organized in Hybrid mode, with some students attended in the offline mode and the rest of students attended the program in online mode. The inhouse faculty were the resource persons. The sessions were interactive in nature. Around 93 interns got benefited from the workshop.

A 2-day skill training workshops were organized for the Interns on 17.08.2021 and 18.08.2021. The interns were trained in batches in Basic Medical skills, Basic Surgical skills, Communication skills and Resuscitation skills. Skill lab of the institute was effectively utilized for the training program. The students were demonstrated for Fire Safety along with the skills training. The students had an intensive hands-on training for all the skills and participated with enthusiasm.

Program for Postgraduates

the COVID 19 Era

The Medical Education unit of SMVMCH, organized a 2-day workshop on “Basic presentation and teaching skills and Orientation to CBME” for all the second-year postgraduates of SMVMCH, conducted on two batches, the first batch (33 participants) on 18-19th November, 2021 and the second batch (35 participants) on 25th& 26th November, 2021. The program was organized to provide an orientation to the postgraduates about the rules, assessment plan and deliverables during the post-graduation course. The program also oriented them about seminars and journal club and provided guidance in planning during the preparatory phase and tips for improving their presentation skills. The program also gave an overview about the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum and highlighted the goals, roles and competencies of Indian Medical Graduates to them.

A dedicated session on skills training incorporating Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and soft skills such as Communication skills, teaching clinical history taking, tutorial teaching and breaking bad news was conducted which was highly appreciated by the participants. The participants were given a hands-on training on developing objectives from Competencies. The highlight of the Workshop was Micro teaching session in small groups in which the participants could apply the learning from the Workshop and could showcase the teaching skills of the participants.

Around 20 resource faculties from various specialties acted as facilitators for the sessions. The participants enthusiastically participated and the sessions were highly interactive. The workshop has been awarded 4 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

Curriculum Implementation Support Program (CISP) -1was held on 18th-20th June 2019 under the observation of Dr.Z.Zayapragassarazan,Co-convener,Regional Centre, MCI Regional Centre ,JIPMER, Puducherry-605006. A total of 30 senior, mid and junior level faculties’ form our institute participated in the workshop. The 3-day workshop was organized as per the guidelines of MCI, the sessions were interactive, with group activities for participants. The workshop was evaluated by the observer and the feedback was obtained from the participants in each workshop.

Workshop on “Designing a Multiple-Choice Question” The “Workshop on Designing MCQ” was organized on 13th January 2020. The session was facilitated by Dr.B.Abhishekh Gowda, Associate Professor, Department of Transfusion Medicine and Dr.Mahalakshmy T, Associate Professor, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, JIPMER. Around 20 faculty from first & second professional year participated in the workshop. Feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Workshop on ‘E-Learning tools in educational research

E-Learning tools in educational research

This workshop was held on 8th February, 2020 and was facilitated by Dr.Narasimman Swaminathan Professor of Physiotherapy, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research. About 23 faculty participated in the workshop and they were sensitized to different e-learning tools like Kahoot, Socrative Quiz and also oriented to usage of Institutional LMS. Feedback was obtained from all the participants.

Workshop on “Assessment of Attitude”

The workshop on “Assessment of Attitude” was organized on 12.02.2020, at the MEU hall for the Phase I & Phase II faculty. The sessions were facilitated by Dr.Ravishankar, Basic Science Faculty, Oceania University of Medicine, Samoa.

Lecture cum Demonstration on ‘How to use Learning Management System and Smart board’

This demonstrationwas held on 20th March, 2020 for the faculties of Phase-I, Phase-2 and Phase-3 (Part-1) as per the program schedule mentioned in Table.1. A total of 28 senior, mid and junior level faculties from our institute participated in the lecture cum Demonstration.As part of Covid-19, the seating arrangement for the session was made following the principles of the social distancing. At the end of the program the faculty feedback was obtained and the faculty requested to have a one-day Hands-on workshop on Learning Management Systemfor faculties.

Workshop on “Designing Timetable for CBME”

As a part of the implementation of CBME in Phase 2 & Phase 3 for the batch of 2019-20, a series of workshops were organized by MEU for the faculty of SMVMCH. The first workshop “Designing Timetable for CBME”, was organized on 04.06.2020. Around 35 faculty were trained in the workshop with the steps in the “Designing of CBME Timetable” and hands on experience for the same. The curriculum committee members facilitated the sessions in the workshop.

Workshop on “Curriculum Implementation Support Program”

With the request from Faculty, MEU organized a workshop on sensitizing the faculty of Medicine & Surgery to the “Curriculum Implementation Support Program” on 18.06.2020. An overview of CBME was given by the curriculum committee members to the participants.

Workshop on “Choosing an appropriate Teaching Learning Method”

 In continuation with the workshop “Designing Timetable for CBME”, this workshop on “Choosing an appropriate Teaching Learning Method” was organized on 24.06.2020. Around 35 faculty were sensitized to the different TL methods available to address the competencies of different domains and hands on experience was given on aligning the TL methods with the competencies. The curriculum committee members facilitated the sessions in the workshop.

Workshop on “Alignment & Integration for CBME”

A one-day workshop was planned on 13th July, 2020, to orient the faculty to the basics of Alignment and Integration. All the CBME coordinators and AIT coordinators participated in the workshop. In the workshop, the faculty had “Hands on experience” in aligning the competencies in the same phase and integrating the content across the phases.

Schedule was planned successively for next three days, where time-slots were allotted for the AIT coordinators & HODs of respective departments, to interact with faculty of departments in the same phase or across the phases, for planning alignment and integration.

A total of 30 senior, mid and junior level faculties’ form our institute participated in the workshop. The 2-day workshop was organized as per the guidelines of MCI. The sessions were interactive, with group activities for participants. Feedback was obtained from the participants. The sessions were carried out with appropriate seating arrangement (maintaining social distancing) and following COVID safety precautions.

Orientation to “Intellectual Property Rights”

An orientation program was organized for I MBBS students on “Intellectual Property Rights” on 07.12.2020. The students had an orientation session by Dr.S.ManganiMangalavalli, IPR Coordinator, Department of Physiology. Following which there was presentation by the faculty on their respective patent applications. The program ended with a valedictory function, where prizes were distributed to the winners of “Patent Prize Competition”.

UG Orientation Program

NMC implemented CBME for the Medical undergraduates since 2019-20. Foundation Course was an essential component of CBME which was carried out for a period of 1 month. As a part of the Foundation Course, 5-day orientation program was organized by MEU from 19th August to 23rd August, with spill over sessions covered on 27th August and 13th September for the I MBBS students.

Orientation Program for ‘Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI)

Three-day Orientation program was held on 12-14, February 2020. The workshop was facilitated by in-house faculty. The sessions were interactive and participatory in nature.

Learning outcomes of the program were –
  • To offer formal orientation to roles, responsibilities and rules for CRRI at SMVMCH
  • To understand the infrastructure, scope of the hospital
  • To ensure revision of basic clinical skills such as history taking, laboratory investigation, patients’ rights and responsibilities and prescription of rational drugs in patient care
